Autumn fun and pumpkin picking at Hendrewennol

THIS weekend, after a bit of an up and down sort of week involving a hospital trip for Santi, we wanted a bit of quality family time. Not ones for chilling out at home, this meant a random outing to a pick-your-own farm to look for pumpkins.

We’re planning to throw a toddlers’ Halloween party in a couple of weeks as Ezra’s due date a day after Santi’s birthday meant we couldn’t celebrate him turning two in style, so this was a perfect excuse to go pumpkin picking (as if we needed an excuse!).

Over the summer we visited Hendrewennol, near Cardiff, to pick strawberries and raspberries, and as luck would have it, this weekend was their last opening weekend for pumpkins. So after a night shift for Stew we piled into the car and headed up the M4. Compared to our summer visit the car park was nice and quiet, and entry was free – you just pay for your pumpkins. Santi almost cut the day short by choosing one from the display in the shop … no foraging for him!

It didn’t take long to find the pumpkin patch, and Santi wasted no time in marching over to choose the two he wanted (and a few extras which we snuck back).

Of course, we couldn’t resist a family photo with our pumpkins!

With our chosen pumpkins we went for a walk around the rest of the grounds, stopping for a play in a castle-themed area. There are wooden frames set up to build log teepees, and little houses to explore. We had a hard time getting Santi out of there!

From there, we walked over a bridge to the wildflower maze, where there are more castles to explore and stamps to collect. It was such a nice morning weather-wise that we spent quite a bit of time just wandering around.

Before going home we stopped to have something to eat and a last play. There’s a really nice area with a bouncy castle and picnic tables indoors and a sandpit and hay bales to climb over outside. We didn’t venture there in the summer as it was so busy, but this weekend we almost had it to ourselves.

After all that fresh air the two boys were asleep within minutes of getting in the car, and we have two pumpkins ready to carve for our party!

We made a little video of our morning out … we’d love you to let us know what you think of it.

  1. What a wonderful post. I absolutely adored the video! I have been trying to find somewhere to take mine to pick pumpkins, this place looks like so much fun. Will have to look it up as Cardiff isn’t too far from us. Thank you for sharing such wonderful photos and a video of your day #ChasingNature
